Our club would like to recognize the youngest honorary member of our club, Holly Erenstone.  She is a regular attendee at our breakfast meetings, coming with her mother and club member, Debbie Erenstone.  Sargent-of-Arms, Joe McAvoy is seen in this picture visiting with Holly.  Joe has provided a detailed profile of our youngest member:

A Profile Of The Youngest Member Of The Lake Placid Rotary Club

Holly Erenstone is seven years old and a second grader at the Lake Placid Elementary School.  She is also, proudly, the youngest member of the Lake Placid Rotary Club.  Holly first started volunteering with her mother, Debbie Erenstone at local Rotary Community Service events, like adopt-a-highway clean-up.  Now, more than a year later, she is the youngest member of the club, attending meetings, asking questions of guest lecturers and planning her own community service projects.  Holly recently shared her experiences (and a cup of hot chocolate) with Joe McAvoy, one of the more senior, and infamous members of the club.

Joe:  What is your favorite subject?
Holly:  Reading! I love to read, my favorite books are Geronimo and Thea Stilton.
Joe:  Holly, what is your favorite part of the Rotary meeting?
Holly: The Happy Dollar!  I like to donate money and tell everyone something about myself.
Joe:  Have you done other things for Rotary?
Holly:  I ring the bell [for the Salvation Army Kettle], Adopt a Highway pickup, I like to collect the cans! I also help sell raffle tickets for the Dam Duck Race.
Joe: I know you like to do other things than visit Rotary too; you have climbed one of the 46 high peaks, which one?
Holly: I climbed my favorite, Cascade and the one with the airplane [Wright Peak].
Joe: I know you are a Nordic skier and racer, I was very impressed to see you race over at the jumps. But wait, you are a ski jumper too! I remember at one meeting you told us about a ski jumping competition…
Holly: Yes!  It was my first competition out of Lake Placid, without my parents!
Joe: Wow, how big is your jump?
Holly: I jump the 20, and sometimes at the competition I jumped on 10 meters too.
Joe: Well, Holly, I have one more question, what projects do you think Rotary should work on?
Holly: I think Rotary should help raise money for people with problems with their heart.  They should also help people build houses after a tornado.
Joe:  Those sound like good ideas!

Joe McAvoy is dedicated to Rotary’s mission to eradicate Polio, he feels this is an essential mission and tells Holly about the Iron Lung the club uses to help raise money for international vaccination efforts.  She is interested and bewildered.

Holly’s mother, Debbie Erenstone, is thankful for Holly’s involvement in Rotary. “I feel that her participation in Rotary has introduced her to a diverse group of individuals within our community who are all committed to making our town, and the world, a better place. Holly is learning how important it is to help others.”  It is touching to see the endearing friendship between these two Rotary members brought together by a cup of hot cocoa.

The Lake Placid Rotary Club meets Thursday mornings at 7:20 a.m. at the Courtyard Marriott Lake Placid.  All are welcome.
