Today's presentation was by Corinne Carey, Senior Campaign Director of http://www.compassionandchoices.org New York's newly enacted law takes effect 8/5/26. The law allows mentally capable, terminally ill adults (18+) with a prognosis of six months or less to request self-administered medication to pass away peacefully on their own terms. To protect patients, the process requires New York residency, multiple witnessed requests, mental health evaluations, and the physical ability to self-administer the medication. : Medical aid in dying does not replace hospice or palliative care; in fact, 90% of people who use this option in other states are already enrolled in hospice. Other legal options, such as refusing treatment or voluntarily stopping eating and drinking, also remain available. This law cannot be used by those who have lost mental capacity, such as advanced dementia patients. However, specialized advanced care directives can help guide care in these specific situations. Corinen encouraged talking to your doctor now if support is needed for your end-of-life wishes and to explore advanced care planning tools with your loved ones today.
